Verification within Meta’s Third-Party Fact-Checking Program
On April 29, 2023, information was spread online that Volodymyr Zelenskyi allegedly said that he carries a gun to shoot himself.
However, this is false. In an interview, the President of Ukraine stated that he needs a gun for self-defense purposes.
Zelenskyi commented on carrying a gun in Dmytro Komarov’s documentary film “Year. Behind the Scenes”. The President acknowledged that he has a gun, saying, “Yes, I have one. Well, yes, I know how to use it. Do you realize that the President of Ukraine could be captured by the Russians? It’s a disgrace. I just think it’s disgraceful“. The journalist then asked Zelenskyi what he specifically needs the weapon for. The President said it is for self-defense: “No, come on, we can’t shoot ourselves. To shoot back — yes“.
