The common feature of totalitarian regimes is the state’s unlimited control over media. Every outlet, state-owned or private works for the state cause. The state isolates citizens from alternative information sources to control the agenda and form their worldview to keep them in line. We can see the same thing in Putin’s russia – independent media are oppressed, while social media are being shut down or used for the benefit of propaganda.
